The Chihuahua is a very small dog with a enormous character. A national emblem of Mexico, those attentive and amusing"handbag dogs" are one of the oldest breeds of the Americas, with a lineage going back to the early times.

Chihuahuas (pronounced or ) are the smallest dogs in the world. Chihuahua is a state in Mexico, Chihuahua is also Chihuhuahua in dog breed and Chis for short. Chihuahuas are named after the city Chihuahua, Mexico because they were found there. They can be found in many colors like: white, fawn, black or brindle with various markings such as points and/or masks on their faces; tri-colors of chocolate, tan & white or cream; parti colored; smooth coated reds and blacks etc.[1]

Chihuahuas are very small but these little dogs have big hearts and are fiercely loyal to their owners. Chihuahuas are very affectionate and love to play with children. Chis can get along very well with dogs since they like attention from anybody. Chihuahuas are not yappy dogs because they only bark when someone approaches the house or for other reasons.[2]

Chis have a great sense of direction, allowing them to travel large distances without getting lost. Chihuahuas love people and thrive on human companionship Chis will bond closely with their master but not to a point where they start becoming overly protective, aggressive or jealous toward strangers.[3] Chihuahua puppies require an experienced owner who understands what special needs they have in regards to grooming; training and health care (i.e., regular tooth brushing and vet checkups). Chihuahuas are classed as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, Chihuahua puppies need time to mature around 8 months old before they can start serious obedience training. Chis generally have a life span of 15 to 20 years (smaller Chihuahuas tend to live shorter lives than larger Chis). Chihuahuas will typically not reach more than 6 – 7 pounds. It is believed that the smallest Chihuahua on record weighed 2 lbs.[4]

Chis come in many colors: brindle, chocolate & tan, black & tan or tri-color with points and/or masks on their faces; smooth coated reds and blacks etc... Chis have erect ears and a fine, glossy coat.
