Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a German breed of dog with its origins in the alpine area of Switzerland.

It is one of four breeds from that country's mountainous regions, the others being the Entlebucher Sennenhund, Appenzeller and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. The Bernese mountain dog was bred to pull carts laden with milk cans to dairy farms twice daily and help with cattle herding. Berners were also active in pulling carts for butchers. Bernese Mountain Dogs were crossbred with Saint Bernards to create the modern St Bernard breed.
